John C. Haltiwanger is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Maryland, holding the Dudley and Louisa Dillard Professorship. He received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1981. Prior to Maryland, he served at UCLA and Johns Hopkins. As former Chief Economist of the U.S. Census Bureau, he pioneered longitudinal firm-level data analysis. His research focuses on firm dynamics, job creation/destruction, productivity growth, and labor markets. He is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Fellow of the Econometric Society.
Education: Ph.D. in Economics from Johns Hopkins University (1981).
Research interests include longitudinal data analysis, firm-level productivity, and labor market dynamics. His work has global impact, with statistical methods adopted by international agencies. Notable awards include the Julius Shiskin Award (2013), Roger Herriott Award (2014), and Global Entrepreneurship Research Award (2020).
