Univ.-Prof. Dr. Judith Frömmer is a full Professor of French and Italian Literature and Media Studies at the Institute of Romance Studies (University of Vienna), where she serves as Chair. She also leads the Section 'Aesthetics of the Social and Political Imaginary' at the Doctoral School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies.
Research Focus: Specializes in Early Modern Romance literatures (Renaissance and Enlightenment periods), with interdisciplinary work on political semantics, Crusade narratives, gender/family romance, intermediality in novels/TV series, and Petrarch's global translation legacy. Her acclaimed monograph Italien im Heiligen Land. Typologien frühneuzeitlicher Gründungsnarrative (2018) reinterprets Crusade narratives as flexible frameworks for political community-building.
Key Projects: Co-Principal Investigator for 'Petrarch in Global Translation: A Genealogy of Western Love,' analyzing Petrarch's Canzoniere translations across languages. Current book project 'Poetics of Retreat. How to Write When There is Nothing to Do' examines retreat structures in French, Italian, English, and Spanish texts.
