Judith Austin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, Health & Technology, specializing in health psychology, positive psychology, and eHealth technologies. Her work focuses on co-designing digital interventions to promote mental well-being, particularly for individuals with chronic or life-threatening conditions such as cancer and ALS. She earned her PhD in 2023, defending research on a mobile self-compassion intervention (Compas-Y) co-developed with cancer patients. Her interdisciplinary approach combines mixed methods and user-centered design principles to ensure interventions are both effective and acceptable.
Her research agenda includes investigating sensor technologies and virtual reality applications for lifestyle management in chronic illnesses through the 4TU RECENTRE project. She has received accolades such as the ARPH 2024 PhD Award and the Faces of Science prize. Austin also contributes to academic discourse via guest lectures and student supervision, emphasizing compassionate technology and value-driven evaluation frameworks.
Her scientific contributions span over 20 peer-reviewed publications, with a focus on self-compassion interventions, digital health tools, and systematic reviews on compassion-based therapies. Current projects explore adaptive virtual reality for future-self perceptions and the integration of implementation science in health technology innovation.
