Juan Angueyra is an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, affiliated with the Neuroscience & Cognitive Science department and interdisciplinary programs in Molecular and Cellular Biology (MOCB), Physiological Systems (PSYS). His research focuses on understanding how neural circuits assemble during development, particularly in the retina. Using zebrafish as a model system, his group investigates mechanisms governing photoreceptor fate determination and synaptic connectivity to advance regenerative medicine approaches for neurodegenerative diseases.
Key research areas include: 1) Cell fate decisions in retinal progenitors, 2) Synaptic wiring specificity, and 3) Pattern formation in neural tissues. Recent work has addressed photoreceptor diversity and signaling pathways critical for retinal connectivity.
Publications highlight contributions to retinal cell classification, synaptic molecular mechanisms, and light response modulation. His lab's findings bridge developmental neurobiology with therapeutic applications for vision restoration. Ongoing efforts aim to translate developmental insights into strategies for guided neural regeneration.
