João Trocado da Mata is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Policy at the Lisbon University Institute (ISCTE-IUL) and an Associate Researcher at CIES-Iscte - Center for Research and Studies in Sociology. He holds a PhD in Sociology from ISCTE-IUL (2016) and serves as an advisor to the Civil House of the President of the Republic.
His research focuses on reading practices, education policy, and the sociology of education. Dr. Mata has conducted extensive research on book reading habits among Portuguese students, examining how access to books at home and school influences literacy development. His work explores the relationship between educational policies, social inequality, and reading comprehension across different demographic groups. He has particular expertise in educational statistics and the analysis of large-scale educational assessments.
Dr. Mata's recent publications reveal a strong focus on reading practices among Portuguese students, particularly examining how socioeconomic factors influence book access and reading habits. His research often employs large-scale surveys and statistical analysis to identify trends and disparities in educational outcomes. A significant portion of his recent work centers on the "Barómetro'23" study, which provides comprehensive insights into reading practices across Portugal's basic and secondary education systems, with special attention to gender differences, home environments, and school resources.

He collaborates extensively with researchers Neves, J.S., Ávila, P., and Lopes, Miguel Ângelo on projects related to reading practices and educational assessment.
