Dr. Joye Smith is an Associate Professor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL P-12) at Lehman College's Department of Middle and High School Education. She coordinates the MSED and Advanced Certificate in TESOL, the Bilingual Extension grades 5-12, and manages a grant-funded Clinically Rich Intensive Teaching Institute program. Her research focuses on best practices for English Language Learners/Emergent Bilingual Learners, writing assessment, and socio-critical pedagogy across disciplines.
Dr. Smith holds a B.S. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, an M.A. in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University, and an Ed.D. in Applied Linguistics from Columbia University. Her work has been published in the TESOL Journal and NYS TESOL Journal, and she contributed to an e-book on Community Mapping. She actively reviews for academic journals and conferences.
Before joining Lehman, she taught English internationally and in New York City's metro area across diverse age groups. Her professional service includes roles as a conference reviewer and workshop presenter.
