Joye Bowman is a Professor of History and Interim Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She holds a Ph.D. from UCLA (1980) and specializes in African history, particularly focusing on former Portuguese colonies and South Africa. Her research examines colonial expansion, commerce, and the socio-economic dynamics of West Africa during the 19th century.
Her major publication, Ominous Transition (1997), explores colonial expansion in the Senegambia and Guinea regions. Current collaborative work with Professor John Higginson investigates American engineers' roles in South Africa. Bowman's academic contributions include articles in the Journal of African History, Current Bibliography of African Affairs, and Revista Internacional de Estudos Africanos.
She oversees the College of Humanities and Fine Arts as Interim Dean, maintaining active research and administrative commitments. Her work bridges historical analysis with institutional leadership, emphasizing colonial-era economic structures and their lasting impacts.
