Dr Joyce Nicholson is a Lecturer in Education (People, Place & Social Change) at the University of Glasgow's School of Education, where she has taught since 2009. Her roles include instructing on MSc Educational Studies, MEduc programs, and BA Community Development courses. Her research focuses on women who use substances, children affected by parental substance use, and schools as safe havens. She previously worked with STRADA (2009–2016) developing courses for educators on children impacted by parental substance misuse and served as a counselor and outreach worker supporting drug users and families.
Her PhD explores whether schools act as 'safe havens' or 'nightmares' for children with drug-using mothers. Notable projects include evaluating the Renfrewshire Reconnection Project (2023) and contributing to EU-funded research on domestic violence rehabilitation (2014). Nicholson’s work emphasizes interagency collaboration, community responses, and addressing stigma in education and healthcare settings.
Publications span journals, conference presentations, and policy reports. Key themes include youth substance use implications for teacher education, domestic abuse recovery programs, and systemic support for marginalized groups. She actively engages in workshops addressing intersections of substance use and abuse with family and community well-being.
