Joyce Lu is an Associate Professor of Theatre at Pomona College, where she has been teaching since 2008. Her work bridges applied theatre, movement practices, and social justice, with a focus on Asian and Asian American performance, somatics, and healing justice. She is a certified Feldenkrais Method practitioner and founder of LA Playback Theatre Company.
- Education: Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley; M.F.A. from University of Hawai’i at Manoa; B.A. from Occidental College.
Research Interests:
Joyce Lu explores intersections between race, contemporary performance, and somatic practices. Her research includes:
- Use of playback theatre in equity, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI) work.
- Decolonizing care systems through performing arts and healing justice.
- Application of Feldenkrais Method and Body Weather Laboratory techniques in embodied performance.
- Staging Asian American identities through solo and devised theatre.
Performance Highlights:
She has performed in major productions such as Mare Ibrium (2015) and Grace Needs A Mirror (2016), collaborating with artists like Barry Shabaka Henley, Hirokazu Kosaka, and Christine Germain. Her work spans institutions including Guggenheim Museum, Grand Performances, and San Francisco International Arts Festival.
