Joyce L Tolliver is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Program in Translation and Interpreting Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, European Union Center, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Center for Global Studies. Her research focuses on gender, sexuality, and cultural discourses in Spain's late modern empire, particularly analyzing colonial dynamics in the Philippines and 19th-20th century Spain.

Joyce's recent publications examine colonialism, mestizaje, and gender through historical texts, with a current project titled Family Troubles: Spain and the Philippines in the Late Modern Empire. Her work bridges narrative analysis, translation studies, and postcolonial theory.
She has received the Graduate College Outstanding Mentor Award (2000) and a Center for Advanced Study Associate Research Grant (2012). Courses taught include topics on empathy in narrative, Spanish literature, and translation studies. Her research integrates interdisciplinary methodologies to explore imperial and postcolonial identities.
