Joyce M. Bell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity (RDI), Sociology Department, and the College at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on racism in organizations, social movements, and the role of diversity discourse in co-opting racial equity efforts. She has authored a book on the Black Power Movement’s impact on social work professions and is currently developing work on Black futures, liberatory organizations, Black internationalism, and Black fashion.
Her academic career emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to race, law, and education. Key research areas include analyzing how resistance to racism shapes professional fields, critiquing liberal diversity frameworks, and exploring Black Power legal strategies. She teaches courses that integrate race-critical perspectives into social analysis.
Selected articles highlight her engagement with topics like institutional racism in universities, the legal dimensions of social movements, and Black activism’s historical and contemporary manifestations. Her work bridges sociological theory with practical critiques of systemic inequities.
