Joy Winbourne is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML), within the Kennedy College of Sciences. Her work focuses on terrestrial biogeochemistry and global change ecology, examining how human activities like urbanization and deforestation impact ecosystem processes. She leads the Terrestrial Biogeochemistry Group at UML, which integrates field studies, molecular analyses, and remote sensing to study carbon, nutrient, and water dynamics in ecosystems.
Dr. Winbourne holds a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of California, Davis (2015), and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Earth Science from the University of Massachusetts Boston (2008). Her research emphasizes actionable data to inform sustainable environmental policies, with studies spanning tropical forests and urban landscapes in the northeastern U.S.
Her research interests include urban ecology, forest fragmentation, climate change impacts, and plant ecophysiology. Methodologies include stable isotope analysis, satellite-based modeling, and meta-analyses to scale ecosystem processes from individual trees to landscapes. Recent work highlights the role of urban trees in mitigating heat islands and quantifying biogenic carbon fluxes in metropolitan areas.

Current initiatives include developing satellite-based models for latent heat flux estimation and advancing methodologies for nitrogen fixation studies in diverse ecosystems.
