Barry Logan is the Samuel S. Butcher Professor in the Natural Sciences at Bowdoin College's Department of Biology. His research explores plant responses to environmental stress, specializing in photosynthesis mechanisms, chlorophyll fluorescence, and forest ecology across diverse ecosystems from Alaskan conifer forests to Maine coastal regions.
Research focuses span:
- Chlorophyll fluorescence scaling from leaves to satellite remote sensing (NASA/NSF-funded)
- Ecophysiology of eastern dwarf mistletoe infections on spruce trees
- Interdisciplinary art-ecology collaborations documenting Monhegan Island's environmental history
Recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on photosynthetic phenology tracking through optical signals, conifer stress responses, and urban carbon flux quantification. Collaborative projects involve institutions like Boston University, Caltech, and UC Davis.
