Joy Smith is a Professor of Early Harps and Harp Tutor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, specializing in Historical Performance within the Strings, Harp & Guitar department. Her career began at age 6 with a lifelong connection to the harp, leading her to perform globally with seven different harps across diverse genres and eras.
She is celebrated for her historically informed yet innovative approach, blending traditional techniques with improvisation. Notable performances include collaborations with ensembles like I Fagiolini, The Gabrieli Consort, and appearances at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Glastonbury Festival. BBC Radio 3 praised her work as 'improvisatory and spontaneous.'
Joy’s research interests span medieval to contemporary music, emphasizing contextual authenticity while challenging conventional boundaries. She also engages in composition and percussion, further enriching her multidisciplinary artistry.
