Deborah York

Deborah York is a Professor of Vocal Studies at the Berlin University of the Arts, located within the Faculty of Performing Arts. Her expertise lies in historically informed performance practice and vocal pedagogy, blending artistry with scholarly research. She holds an honorary professorship at Leeds School of Music (2018–2019) and has served as Visiting Professor in Vocal Studies at her current institution. Her career spans over decades with engagements at renowned opera houses like Covent Garden, Teatro Colón, and Glyndebourne.

Education:

• Born in Sheffield, England
• Studied singing with Greta Rawson and piano/percussion with Avis Benn and Len Addy
• Mus.B (First Class Honors) in Musicology at the University of Manchester
• Advanced vocal studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Laura Sarti

Research & Artistic Work: Specializes in Baroque repertoire, including over 60 Bach cantatas and world premieres such as Harrison Birtwistle’s 'Second Mrs Kong.' Her recordings include Grammy-winning performances and collaborations with ensembles like Concerto Italiano and Gabrieli Consort.

Advising & Leadership: Artistic Director of the Austria Baroque Academy (2009, 2015–2017).
