Dr. Joy Rumble is an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). Her work focuses on science communication, public perception of biotechnology, and agricultural education strategies. She advises graduate student Sherifat Alabi and has been recognized with the CFAES STARS Program Cohort selection (2023) and the Ohio State ATI Outstanding Advisor award (2023).
Dr. Rumble’s research bridges communication theory and practice, addressing topics such as gene editing perceptions, consumer behavior in food systems, and Extension program efficacy. She explores how messaging influences public trust, decision-making, and adoption of agricultural innovations. Her studies frequently involve interdisciplinary collaborations and applied methodologies like photovoice and focus groups.
Her scholarship spans over 50 publications since 2018, analyzing issues ranging from local food branding to water conservation messaging. She emphasizes bridging gaps between scientific experts and the public, particularly in contentious areas like genetic modification and food safety. Recent work investigates generational differences in biotechnology attitudes and the role of social media influencers in health decisions.
