Dr. Joy Garfield is a Senior Teaching Fellow and Deputy Head of the Business Analytics and Information Systems Department at Aston Business School, Aston University. She holds a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and has over 20 years of teaching experience across multiple UK universities. Her research focuses on systems development methodologies, IS/IT alignment, and pedagogical approaches in higher education. She currently leads undergraduate and postgraduate modules including Agile Practices in IT and Management, and Effective Management Consultancy.
Education:
- PhD in Informatics (Requirements Elaboration for System Co-development), University of Manchester (2004-2009)
- MSc in Computer Science, University of Birmingham (1999-2000)
- BSc in Geography, Coventry University (1994-1997)
Research Interests: Joy’s work emphasizes early-stage systems development processes, including systems modelling and requirements engineering. She explores innovative teaching methods for information systems education, particularly for international students. Her recent work includes applying Soft Systems Methodology to solve complex organizational problems and integrating generative AI into pedagogical frameworks.

Labs/Teams: Active in research teams focused on system dynamics modelling for sustainability, digital transformation in SMEs, and educational technology innovation. Leads Aston’s OIM Learning and Teaching Convenor group (2024-2025).
