Joy Elizabeth Hayes is a Professor at the University of Iowa's Department of Communication Studies within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on media history and theory, race and ethnicity in media, U.S.-Mexico broadcasting history, community media, and docudrama studies. She holds a PhD from the University of California, San Diego. Hayes has been recognized with awards including the Fulbright Scholar to Mexico and grants from the University of Iowa and Obermann Center for Advanced Studies.
Her current projects include investigating docudrama's evolution, the history of family planning communication in Kenya, and the communication strategies of the U.S. House Committee on Un-American Activities. Hayes has authored/co-authored three books, including New Deal Radio and Radio Nation, and publishes in top journals like Media, Culture and Society and Journal of Cinema and Media Studies.
Her work spans transnational media analysis, emphasizing Latin America and the U.S., with a focus on radio's role in cultural and political contexts. Hayes is actively involved in academic conferences and has contributed to understanding media's role in crises, from the 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast to modern social media.
