Mary Hayes is an Associate Professor of English and Director of the Medieval Studies minor at the University of Mississippi. She holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College, an M.A. from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. Her research focuses on medieval religious cultures, the history of the English language, and intersections between medieval and modern studies. Hayes has authored influential works such as Divine Ventriloquism in Medieval English Literature (2011) and co-edited Approaches to Teaching the History of the English Language (2017). Her current projects include a textbook on the history of English and a monograph on medieval death culture.
Hayes’s academic interests extend to magic, esotericism, and medievalisms in popular culture like Game of Thrones. She has received awards from the Medieval Academy of America and the Newberry Library. Her teaching spans Old and Middle English literature, linguistic history, and medieval religious devotion. Hayes actively contributes to academic communities through editorial work and commemorative volumes honoring scholars like Claire Sponsler.
