Dr. Joy Bergelson is a Research Professor at the University of Chicago, affiliated with the Department of Ecology and Evolution. She leads an interdisciplinary research program focused on the ecology and evolution of plant-pathogen interactions, primarily using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system. Her lab integrates molecular genetics, computational tools, field biology, and population genetics to explore how ecological interactions shape evolutionary dynamics.
- Education:
- ScB in Biology, Brown University (1984)
- MPhil in Ecology, University of York (1986)
- PhD in Zoology, University of Washington (1990)
Her research spans plant-microbe coevolution, microbial community dynamics, genetic basis of resistance, and ecological genomics. She has pioneered studies on Arabidopsis microbiomes, local adaptation, and gene-for-gene systems, contributing to understanding host-pathogen evolutionary genetics. Her publications reflect expertise in Botany, Microbiology, Genetics, and Computational Biology, with recent work emphasizing microbiome engineering and fitness trade-offs.
Scientific awards and honors include election to the National Academy of Sciences (2018), the James D Watson Professorship (2017), BSD Distinguished Faculty Award (2017), NASA Louis Block Professorship (2010), and fellowships from the AAAS and Packard Foundation. Her lab collaborates globally and conducts field experiments in Michigan, Sweden, and France.
