Josh Banta

Josh Banta is a Professor in the Department of Biology at The University of Texas at Tyler within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research integrates ecological, genetic, and evolutionary approaches to address conservation challenges across multiple biological scales.

His educational background includes a Senior Postdoctoral Associate position at New York University (2008-2011), a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from Stony Brook University (2004-2008), and a B.S. in Biology (Cum Laude) with a GIS Mapping Certificate.

Banta's research focuses on integrative evolutionary and conservation biology, examining how ecological, genetic, and evolutionary processes shape biodiversity from genes to landscapes. His work spans terrestrial plants (particularly Arabidopsis thaliana), aquatic species, and microbes, with emphasis on phenotypic variation, genomic architecture of adaptation, and conservation applications. Key areas include epigenetics, climate change impacts on pathogens, freshwater mussel habitat modeling, and plant evolutionary ecology.

Banta has mentored 28 undergraduates over 10+ years, including 17 women and three minorities. His lab integrates genomic, ecological, and spatial approaches to address conservation challenges, particularly for Texas endemic species and freshwater ecosystems.
