Jotham Suez, PhD, MSc, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His research focuses on the human microbiome and its role in health and disease, particularly in metabolic and inflammatory conditions.
- PhD, Weizmann Institute of Science (2019)
- MSc, Tel Aviv University (2012)
- BSc, Tel Aviv University (2009)
Dr. Suez investigates the complex interactions between the gut microbiome, environmental factors (such as diet and antibiotics), and the human host. His work spans microbial ecology, metabolism, and precision medicine, aiming to understand how microbes influence metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity, and inflammatory bowel diseases. He employs multi-omics analysis, clinical trials, and in vivo models to uncover mechanisms of host-microbiome-environment crosstalk.
His recent publications highlight critical issues in microbiome-based therapies, including the impact of artificial sweeteners on glucose metabolism, the efficacy and risks of probiotics and fecal microbiome transplantation, and the dynamics of the gut resistome. His research has been published in top journals such as Cell, Nature, and Nature Medicine, and has significantly influenced public and clinical understanding of microbiome science.
Scientific Awards:
- NIH Director's Early Independence Award (2020)
- Highly Cited Researchers list (2022, 2023)
- Featured in Nature Medicine's 'trailblazing early-career researchers' (2022)
Dr. Suez leads the Suez Lab, where he mentors students and postdoctoral fellows in cutting-edge microbiome research. His lab has received recognition for innovation and collaboration, and he is actively involved in translating microbiome science into clinical practice. He frequently engages with the media to discuss the implications of microbiome research for public health.
The Suez Lab is a dynamic research group focused on systems microbiology, combining experimental and computational approaches to develop safe and effective microbiome-targeted therapies for precision medicine.
