Dr. Josie Welsh is a Senior Lecturer in Law and Course Leader for all LLB programmes at the University of Worcester’s School of Law, which falls under the Institute of Arts and Humanities. She holds a PhD in Public Law from the University of Sheffield, alongside a Master’s in Jurisprudence (Public Law), an LLB (Honours), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Skills (Distinction).
Her research focuses on judicial power dynamics in the UK constitution, including the role of the Lord Chief Justice, leadership styles in the judiciary, and the interplay between statutory and social authority. She is a member of the University of Worcester’s Constitutions, Rights and Justice Research Group and actively engages with judicial scholars in Public Law.
Josie has been recognized for her teaching excellence through multiple Student Union Students’ Choice Award nominations and a University of Worcester Teaching Award in 2020. Her work emphasizes fostering judicial welfare, advocating for transparent justice systems, and navigating complex relationships between the judiciary, government, and media. She has contributed to debates on court funding, judicial security, and the administrative challenges facing HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS).
In advising and grants, she leads LLB and LLM modules such as Public Law, European Union Law in Context, and Human Rights. Her research initiatives include analyzing post-2005 constitutional reforms and the evolving role of judicial leaders. She collaborates with the Transparency and Open Justice Board and engages in high-profile parliamentary discussions, reflecting her commitment to judicial advocacy and systemic improvement.
