Josie Steed serves as Associate Dean for Research at Gray's School of Art, Robert Gordon University, where she leads significant research initiatives focused on Scottish manufacturing and creative businesses within a global context. Her work bridges academic research and industry practice through extensive knowledge exchange partnerships.
Her research interests span several interconnected domains:
- Fashion & Textile Sustainability – exploring circular economy approaches, waste management, and heritage craft revaluation
- Knowledge Exchange Partnerships – connecting Scottish textile SMEs with academic resources
- Future Visions for Textiles – examining technology, new materials, and sustainable manufacturing
- Smart Textiles for Health & Well-Being – developing textile solutions that improve quality of life
- Textile Thinking – exploring applications of 'soft' thinking across various contexts
Steed's recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on heritage preservation through innovative approaches, with particular emphasis on Harris Tweed as a case study for sustainable, heritage-based manufacturing. Her work increasingly integrates immersive technologies to communicate textile heritage and sustainability values while addressing contemporary challenges in the fashion industry.
She has secured substantial funding from Innovate UK, AHRC, Scottish Government, and other sources to support her research projects, including three Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and the Immersive Scotland network. Her collaborative approach has established networks across design, business, cultural organizations, and government agencies.
As an educator, Steed teaches critical and contextual studies at undergraduate levels and serves as a postgraduate tutor on the MA in Design program while supervising PhD students in textile-related fields. She is currently co-editing a book on fashion designer Bill Gibb to be published by Bloomsbury in January 2026.
