Josiah Blackmore is the Nancy Clark Smith Professor of the Language and Literature of Portugal at Harvard University's Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. He specializes in medieval and early modern Portuguese literature, focusing on themes of maritime expansion, colonialism, and textual history. His work bridges literary analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, including manuscript studies, sensory history, and queer theory.
Blackmore holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and previously taught at the University of Toronto. He has been a Visiting Professor at Harvard and the University of Chicago. His research interests include Iberian studies, Galician-Portuguese poetry, book history, and gender/sexuality studies.
Notable works include *Moorings: Portuguese Expansion and the Writing of Africa* (2009), *Manifest Perdition* (2002), and co-edited volumes such as *Queer Iberia* (1999). His current projects explore maritime textualities and medieval Galician-Portuguese poetry.
He has received awards including the ITT International Fellowship (University of Lisbon) and a *Choice* Outstanding Academic Title designation for *Moorings*. His research has been presented globally, with lectures in North America, Europe, and South Africa.
