Joshua Whitford is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Columbia University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He joined the faculty in 2004 and is also a faculty affiliate at the Center on Organizational Innovation. His work bridges sociology, political economy, and economic geography, with a focus on decentralized production systems.
His research interests include economic and organizational sociology, comparative political economy, economic geography, and pragmatist social theory. He investigates the social, political, and institutional consequences of outsourcing in manufacturing, particularly the phenomenon of 'network failures' in decentralized production regimes. He is developing a general theory of network failure and analyzing industrial transformations through major book projects.
Whitford is the author of The New Old Economy: Networks, Institutions and the Organizational Transformation of American Manufacturing (Oxford University Press, 2005) and is currently co-authoring two books: When Networks Fail (Princeton University Press, with Andrew Schrank) and Icons on the Edge (University of Chicago Press, with Francesco Zirpoli and Markus Becker).
