Yingyao Wang is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia's College of Arts & Sciences (A&S), specializing in economic and political sociology. Her research explores how political institutions and social networks shape economic development, particularly in China. She focuses on bureaucratic structures, corruption, taxation, industrial policy, and financial market development.
Her book Markets with Bureaucratic Characteristics: How Economic Bureaucrats Make Policies and Remake the Chinese State (Columbia UP, 2024) examines mid-level bureaucrats' role in China's economic reforms. Recent work includes studies on digital taxation, party-state elite dynamics, and global investment strategies.
