Andrew Schrank is the Olive C. Watson Professor of Sociology and International & Public Affairs at Brown University’s Watson Institute. He holds affiliations with the Department of Political Science, Population Studies and Training Center, and Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Schrank earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 2000. His research focuses on bureaucracy, labor markets, science & technology policy, and development studies, with a regional emphasis on Latin America and the U.S. He co-authored Root-Cause Regulation (2018) and authored The Economic Sociology of Development (2023). His work examines regulatory frameworks, supply chain governance, and the intersection of identity and investment behavior.
Research interests include collaborative governance in manufacturing, labor law enforcement, and the measurement of governance quality. He has consulted for institutions like the World Bank and UNDP, and collaborates with NGOs such as Somos un Pueblo Unido. Schrank’s grants include funding from NSF, Ford Foundation, and MacArthur Foundation. His recent scholarship analyzes gendered effects of immigration enforcement and the social construction of regulatory burdens.
He teaches courses on development theory, comparative historical analysis, and political economy. Awards include CIFAR Fellowship in Innovation, Equity, and Future Prosperity. Schrank’s interdisciplinary work bridges sociology, political science, and development economics, addressing global challenges like inequality and regulatory reform.
