Joshua Sumpter is an Assistant Professor of Biblical & Ministry Studies and University Chaplain at Waynesburg University. He previously served as a youth pastor and associate minister for 10 years in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Sumpter actively engages with ministry networks in the Pittsburgh region and leads Footsteps of Paul tours in Greece with students, blending academic and experiential learning. He teaches courses on New Testament studies, Paul’s ministry, youth ministry practices, and church leadership.

His research interests focus on integrating biblical scholarship with practical ministry, emphasizing student engagement and creative pedagogy. In 2025, he led 24 students on a pilgrimage tracing Paul’s journeys in Acts 16-18, enriching classroom instruction. Sumpter’s teaching excellence was recognized with the 2019 Lucas-Hathaway Award for his innovative approach in BMS 106: Introduction to the New Testament.
He coordinates the BMS Internship program (BMS 465) and oversees the Church Leadership Practicum, fostering hands-on ministry experiences. His partnerships with Footstep Ministries and local churches highlight collaborative efforts in theological education and community engagement.
