Joshua Schuster is a Professor and Director of the Centre for the Study of Theory and Criticism at the University of Western Ontario. He holds a PhD in English from the University of Pennsylvania (2007), a Maîtrise in Philosophy from Université de Paris X Nanterre (2001), and a BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania (1998). His work bridges literary studies, environmental thought, and philosophy, with a focus on extinction, existential risk, and modernist ecologies.
Research interests include the intersections of poetics, American literature, and environmental ideas. Recent publications explore extinction narratives ( What Is Extinction? 2023 ), existential risk frameworks ( Calamity Theory 2021 ), and modernist ecological poetics. He teaches courses on environmental literature, contemporary philosophy, and American literary traditions.
His scholarship spans interdisciplinary topics from coral cultures in the Anthropocene to biopolitical ontology, reflecting a commitment to urgent environmental and existential questions. He has contributed to critical theory, eco-criticism, and avant-garde poetics across multiple decades, with a distinctive focus on reimagining humanity's relationship with ecological systems and planetary futures.
