Joshua Philip Barham

Dr. Joshua Philip Barham is a Reader in Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde, part of the Pure and Applied Chemistry department within the Science Faculty. Previously, he held a Sofja Kovalevskaja Award-funded independent position at the University of Regensburg (2019–2024) and completed postdoctoral research in Japan. His academic journey includes a MSci from University College London and a PhD from the GlaxoSmithKline/University of Strathclyde Collaborative Program.

Research Focus: His work centers on synthetic photoelectrochemistry, aggregation in photochemistry, and flow chemistry. Key areas include leveraging visible light and electrical energy for organic synthesis, understanding aggregation effects in photocatalytic reactions, and developing scalable flow processes for sustainable chemistry. Current projects include the EPSRC-funded HELIOS grant, aiming to pair photoelectrochemical reactions for energy-efficient transformations.

Awards & Recognition: Sofja Kovalevskaja Award (2019), ERC Starting Grant (2024), FameLab Bayern 1st Place (2022), and DFG/SPP2370 funding. His research has been featured in Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Science, and Green Chemistry.

Teaching & Mentorship: Teaches advanced organic chemistry modules at Strathclyde and Regensburg. Advises a dynamic research group with expertise in flow chemistry, photocatalysis, and sustainable methods. Collaborates internationally on projects blending theory, experiment, and industry applications.

Future Vision: Aims to transform persistent pollutants and biomass into valuable chemicals using photoelectrochemical innovations, advancing a circular economy in organic synthesis.
