Joshua Newburger is an Assistant Professor of Orchestral Repertory (Viola) at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. He currently serves as the principal violist of the Rochester Philharmonic and previously held roles including assistant principal violist of the Pacific Symphony. His professional engagements include guest principal positions with the Fresno Philharmonic and Santa Barbara Symphony, as well as section performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, Colorado Symphony, and Buffalo Philharmonic.
Active in film scoring, Newburger recorded for numerous Hollywood productions under composers like John Williams, James Newton Howard, and Ludwig Göransson. His credits span franchises such as Star Wars, Lego Movie, Creed, Charlie’s Angels, IT, and TV series like The Mandalorian and The Orville. He has toured globally with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra and Budapest Festival Orchestra under Ivan Fischer.
Education includes a Bachelor’s in violin from the New England Conservatory (studying under Nicholas Kitchen) and a Master’s in viola from Yale University (studying with Ettore Causa). His viola specialization developed under Michael Klotz, a Rochester native and Eastman alumnus.
