Joshua L. Cherniss is an Associate Professor in the Department of Government at Georgetown University's College. His research focuses on 20th-century political thought, particularly liberal ethics, philosophies of history, and the intersection of political theory with literature and moral psychology. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University, a D.Phil. in Modern European History from the University of Oxford, and a B.A. in Political Science from Yale University.
His major works include Liberalism in Dark Times (2021), which examines liberal thought's ethical responses to anti-liberalism, and A Mind and Its Time (2013), a study of Isaiah Berlin's political thought. He co-edited The Cambridge Companion to Isaiah Berlin (2018). Current research projects explore political resistance in authoritarian regimes and the role of historical philosophy in liberalism.
Cherniss has received prestigious fellowships, including the Laurance S. Rockefeller Visiting Faculty Fellowship at Princeton and Harvard's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics support. His teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, linking political theory to literature and moral psychology.
