Joshua Kirshner is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of York's Department of Environment and Geography. His research focuses on low-carbon transitions, energy governance, urbanization, and environmental policy in regions like Mozambique, Colombia, and Brazil. He holds a PhD from Cornell University (City and Regional Planning), an MA from UCLA (Urban Planning), and a BA from Harvard University (Social Anthropology).
His key projects include the UKRI-funded CESET project on community energy in Ethiopia, Malawi, and Mozambique, and a DFID-funded study on Mozambique's electricity grid access. He co-leads initiatives like the Community Energy Lab in Maputo, aiming to enhance off-grid energy solutions through participatory approaches.
