Cecilia Fåhraeus is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at Uppsala University's Department of Human Geography (Campus Gotland), currently on leave of absence from February 2024 to January 2026. She holds a PhD in Human Geography and teaches within the bachelor's programme in spatial planning.
Her research centers on slums and urban transformation in the Global South, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, with emphasis on livelihood geographies among low-income communities. She investigates women's informal entrepreneurship, spatial decision-making, and disaster impacts through gendered and rights-based lenses, focusing extensively on Zambian urban contexts.
Recent publications analyze gendered livelihood strategies in Zambian slums, highlighting spatial dimensions of women's economic activities and resilience. Her work consistently bridges theoretical geography with participatory fieldwork, demonstrating strong regional expertise in Southern Africa.
Research is supported by grants from SSAG, Helge Ax:son Jonssons stiftelse, and UU Innovation Office. Current projects address communal green spaces for well-being, goat production for climate resilience/women's empowerment, and equitable housing access across Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Indonesia.
She collaborates with Swedish NGO Weeffect and Malmö University (JÄMBO project), employing participatory action research methods directly engaging slum dwellers in Zambia for inclusive urban development solutions.
