Joshua Harris is an Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Program at Sweet Briar College in central Virginia. He holds a B.M. in Instrumental Music Education and Music Performance from Appalachian State University, an M.M. in Music Composition from Brigham Young University, and a Ph.D. in Composition from the University of North Texas. His research focuses on electroacoustic techniques, non-linear narratives, and the interplay between visual art and sound spectra.
He teaches courses in composition, sound design, and musicology, including Sound on Screen and Improvisation. As a composer, Harris has created music for feature films (King Rat, Hum) and concert works commissioned by institutions like the Barlow Endowment and Akropolis Reed Quintet. His music has been performed globally by ensembles such as the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Zeitgeist (St. Paul).
He directs the SArPA (Sound Art Production and Analysis) studio and Coffee Street Studios, spaces for multimedia creation and recording. His recent works explore interdisciplinary art forms, blending chamber music with electronic elements and traditional Korean instruments with modern techniques.
