Joshua D. Lee is an Associate Teaching Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture and Track Chair for the Master of Science in Architecture–Engineering–Construction Management (MSAECM) and PhD-AECM programs. He leads the Protean Design Collaborative, which won the AIA Pittsburgh Honor Award for the Self-Sustaining Liberian Orphan Village project. His research focuses on sustainable design, adaptable architecture, circular construction, and public interest design. He holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, with a dissertation on School Construction Systems Development (SCSD), and prior degrees in Architecture, Sustainable Design, and Marketing.

Research emphasizes deconstruction practices, material reuse, and educational facility design. His 2023 work explores Pittsburgh’s deconstruction pilot project and urban mining strategies. Recent publications address carbon reduction in Liberian housing and resilient construction systems. He organizes conferences like the 2023 International Council on Open Building Conference and chairs the AIA Pittsburgh Board.
Awards include AIA Pittsburgh’s Social Impact in Design Award. His teaching includes courses on reuse experimentation, sustainable solutions for uncertain futures, and AECM synthesis projects focused on Pittsburgh’s built environment challenges.
