Joshua Bernstein is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Southern Mississippi, serving as Director of Graduate Studies and President of the USM Faculty Senate. He holds a PhD from the University of Southern California, an MA from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a BA from Brown University. His research focuses on Creative Writing (Prose), British Modernism, Joseph Conrad, and Environmental Ethics. He has authored multiple acclaimed works including the novel Rachel’s Tomb and essay collection Northern Cowboy, and his academic writing has been recognized with awards like the Harkness Award.
His publications span novels, essays, and literary criticism in journals such as The Kenyon Review and Tin House. He teaches courses in creative writing, literature, and publishing, including Environmental Ethics in Joseph Conrad and Thomas Hardy. Professional affiliations include the Modern Language Association and Joseph Conrad Society of America.
Bernstein is a Fulbright Scholar and fluent in Arabic, Hebrew, and French. His administrative roles include leadership in the USM Faculty Senate and Mississippi’s Faculty Senates Association.
