Susan David Bernstein is a Research Professor at Boston University, previously affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1989–2017). Her research and teaching focus on Victorian literature, gender studies, life writing, and transatlantic Jewish literature. She has authored books such as Roomscape: Women Writers at the British Museum (2013) and Confessional Subjects (1997), and her work explores intersections of gender, sexuality, race, and material culture.
Her teaching spans Victorian literature, print culture, seriality, and creative nonfiction. Recent projects include essays on Middlemarch and a novel titled Crazy Love. Awards include the Distinguished Honors Faculty Award (2013) and Honored Instructor Award (2015). She holds a B.A. from Bennington College and M.A./Ph.D. from Brandeis University.
Her scholarly contributions bridge literary analysis with cultural history, emphasizing spaces like the British Museum as sites of creative collaboration for women writers. Current creative work includes personal essays and fictional narratives addressing contemporary themes.
