Joshi J. Alumkal, M.D., is a Professor at the University of Michigan Medical School, where he serves as Associate Division Chief for Basic Research in the Hematology-Oncology Division and Section Head of Genitourinary Medical Oncology. He directs the Alumkal Lab, focused on transcriptional regulation in lethal prostate cancer progression using biochemical, genomic, and epigenomic approaches. His work aims to develop novel therapies and clinical trials targeting treatment-resistant prostate cancer.
Dr. Alumkal earned his B.A. in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin and M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed training at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Johns Hopkins University, where he also pursued post-doctoral work in cancer epigenetics.
Research Focus: The lab investigates transcriptional reprogramming in prostate cancer, particularly mechanisms of therapy resistance and lineage plasticity. Key areas include epigenetic regulation (e.g., LSD1 and E2F1 roles), neuroendocrine differentiation, and tumor microenvironment interactions.
Awards & Honors:
- Richard T. Jones New Investigator Award (2014)
- Wayne D. Kuni and Joan E. Kuni Endowed Chair (2017)
- Rogel Cancer Center Rogel Scholar (2019)
Mentoring: Actively trains postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and medical trainees. Alumni hold positions at institutions including Rush University, Genentech, and UCLA.
Lab & Collaboration: Leads a multidisciplinary team at the Rogel Cancer Center and Michigan Center for Translational Pathology. Collaborates on projects like MiONCOMATCH to study treatment resistance mechanisms.
