Dr Josh Siepel is an Associate Professor in Management at SPRU - Science Policy Research Unit within the University of Sussex Business School. His research focuses on the intersection of entrepreneurship, skills, and innovation, with emphasis on creative industries. He leads research on creative clusters, R&D, and access to finance at the AHRC Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre. His work has influenced UK government policy, including the Creative Industries Sector Vision (2023) and Levelling Up White Paper (2022). He has secured over £2.4M in research grants and supervised seven PhD students to completion. His teaching includes modules on strategic management and entrepreneurial finance at undergraduate, postgraduate, and MBA levels.
Education: DPhil (Science and Technology Policy) and MSc from University of Sussex, BS in Genetics from Texas A&M University. He holds a PGCert in Higher Education.
Research interests include creative industries, access to SME finance, entrepreneurship, innovation policy, and measurement challenges in innovation. He chairs the International Small Business Journal editorial board and advises bodies like DCMS and the Office for National Statistics.
Notable awards include the 2024 Best Research Paper Award for work on creative industries R&D. He actively engages with policymakers through presentations at OECD, UK Creative Industries Council, and Westminster Media Forum.
