Josephine Van-Ess is an Associate Professor in Management at the University of Sussex Business School, where she also serves as Director of Teaching & Learning (PG and ODL). She joined Sussex in 2016 after six years at the University of Nottingham's China campus, where she taught Business Ethics, Management, and Organisational Behaviour while coordinating Student Exchange Programs. With over nine years of private sector experience in consumer research (working with Nestle, Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Guinness), banking, and telecommunications, she brings industry insights to academia.
Her research focuses on innovative teaching methodologies in higher education, particularly interactive learning, inclusive curriculum design, and feedback systems. Recent publications emphasize creating equitable classrooms, student-staff partnerships for well-being, and reflective learning tools. Her work consistently addresses pedagogical innovation and diversity in educational settings.

Josephine mentors through the Business School's ASPIRE Mentoring Scheme, serves on the CABS CPD Review Board, and acts as external examiner for University of Chichester and University of Bolton partner institutions. She leads initiatives improving dissertation supervision and feedback practices.
