Dr. Sarah Otner is an Associate Professor of Innovation Management at SPRU (Science Policy Research Unit) within the University of Sussex Business School. She holds affiliations with the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation and previously served as a British Academy Innovation Fellow collaborating with The Fragrance Foundation UK. Her academic journey includes roles at Imperial College Business School, Kingston Business School, and ESMT Berlin. Otner earned a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from the London School of Economics, an MSc in Organizational & Social Psychology, and an A.B. in Psychology from Harvard College.
Her research focuses on status dynamics, prize design, and innovation tournaments, combining methodologies from sociology, psychology, and economics. Notable projects include studying peer effects among elites, blinded judging mechanisms, and the establishment of new prizes. She has published widely on topics like Matthew Effect dynamics, scientific collaboration impacts, and research transparency.
Honors include the British Academy Innovation Fellowship and certifications such as Chartered Membership of the Association of Business Schools (CMBE) and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
