Josephine Mylan is a Senior Lecturer in Sustainability & Innovation at Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, working part-time since 2019. She is affiliated with the Sustainable Consumption Institute (SCI) and Manchester Institute for Innovation Research (MIoIR). Her research focuses on societal transitions to sustainable consumption patterns, low-carbon economies, and firm responses to environmental challenges, employing frameworks from science and technology studies, economic sociology, and social practice theory.
Education includes a PhD from the Centre for Research on Innovation and Competition (CRIC), University of Manchester (2010), with prior degrees in Environmental Science (2002) and Sociological Research (2005). She previously held roles as Research Fellow and Research Associate at SCI and MIoIR.
Teaching includes courses on sustainable business practices and innovation for sustainability at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Current PhD supervision focuses on circular economy, foundational economy policy, and plant-based food systems. Past students explored meat analogues, food geographies, and urban food production innovations. Mylan has contributed to projects like the Sustainable Consumption Institute’s 2018-19 initiative and IPCC climate mitigation reports.
Her work addresses everyday practices like food consumption and laundry, emphasizing socio-technical transitions and institutional change. Recent research highlights urban foraging’s role in sustainable cities, corporate strategies for meat substitution, and climate policy integration in municipal food systems.
