Josephine Clayton is a Professor of Palliative Care and Medicine at the Northern Clinical School of the University of Sydney, and Director of the Centre for Learning & Research in Palliative Care at HammondCare. She holds a concurrent role as Senior Staff Specialist Physician in Palliative Medicine at Greenwich Hospital. Her research focuses on end-of-life care communication, advance care planning, and palliative care delivery across diverse populations including those with dementia, intellectual disabilities, and chronic illnesses.
Key research themes include: Palliative Care, Healthy Ageing, and Cancer. Her work employs clinical trials, qualitative methodologies, and implementation science to improve patient outcomes. Recent studies investigate paramedic palliative care practices, advance care planning interventions in primary care, and spirituality in palliative medicine.
Dr. Clayton has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and co-edited major textbooks in palliative care. She leads national initiatives to standardize palliative care education and works closely with clinical teams to bridge gaps between research evidence and clinical practice.
