Joseph Toltz is a scholar and researcher at the University of Sydney, currently serving as Manager of Research Support in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He is also affiliated with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies. From 2014 to 2018, he was a Research Fellow at the Sydney Conservatorium, co-leading the UK Arts & Humanities Research Council-funded project Performing the Jewish Archive.

Research Interests:
Joseph Toltz specializes in Jewish music, Holocaust studies, and migrant cultural studies. His work explores the intersections of music and trauma, focusing on the musical legacies of Jewish refugees and survivors. He has conducted extensive research on the Dunera Boys and Austrian-Jewish composer Wilhelm Grosz.
His research also delves into popular music and ethnomusicology, with publications ranging from Kraftwerk’s influence on electro-funk to ethnographic studies of Holocaust musical testimony. His work is deeply interdisciplinary, combining musicology, history, trauma studies, and archival research.
