Joseph Stepec is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Orchestras at the University of Hawaiʻi. He leads the University of Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, directs the Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony’s Symphony Program, and serves as Artistic Director of the Pacific Music Institute. His roles encompass education, performance, and artistic leadership across Hawaiʻi and internationally.
Education: Studied violin performance at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and orchestral conducting at the Eastman School of Music.
Research interests focus on orchestral performance practices, music education strategies, and cultural engagement through music. He actively clinics ensembles globally and maintains a private conducting and violin studio at UH. His work has been featured in broadcasts reaching thousands.
Collaborations include frequent guest appearances with the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra’s Ohana Concert Series. Teaching emphasizes both instrumental mastery and ensemble leadership.
