Dr. Joseph R. Dongell serves as Professor of Biblical Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary, holding primary responsibility in the Inductive Bible Studies Department since joining the faculty in 1989.
His educational credentials include:
- B.A. from Central Wesleyan College (1978)
- M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary (1981)
- M.A. from the University of Kentucky (1986)
- Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia (1991)
Dr. Dongell's scholarly work centers on New Testament exegesis, with particular expertise in literary structures of the Gospels. His foundational research on Luke's Gospel has expanded to encompass Mark and John, reflecting deep engagement with Synoptic and Johannine literature. He is the author of a published commentary on the Gospel of John (Wesley Press), demonstrating applied biblical scholarship. His command of New Testament Greek underpins his expertise in textual analysis and hermeneutics.
As an ordained elder in the Wesleyan Church, Dr. Dongell maintains active ministry roles including associate pastor duties, adult Sunday school instruction, and regional ministerial training. He previously directed and frequently advised the Wesleyan Seminary Foundation at Asbury, while also representing the institution at the Graduate Student Theological Seminar.
