Joseph Mai is a Professor of French and Department Chair at Clemson University's Department of Languages, affiliated with the World Cinema program. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale University and has held academic positions spanning over two decades. His research focuses on French and Francophone cinema, film philosophy, and contemporary French literature, with recent work examining ordinary life representations in media and literature. He co-directs a Creative Inquiry group studying migration, detention, and hospitality.

Research Interests: Ethical issues in cinema/literature, Cambodian cinema, refugee studies, animal studies, and media theory. He has published monographs on Robert Guédiguian and the Dardenne brothers, and co-edited The Cinema of Rithy Panh.
