Joseph L. Cruz is Chair and Professor of Philosophy at Williams College and serves as Chair of the Cognitive Science Program, where he has been affiliated since 2000.
Education:
- B.A., Williams College (1991)
- Ph.D., University of Arizona (1999)
His research spans Cognitive Science, Philosophy of Mind, and Epistemology, with specialized focus on Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Philosophy of Animals. He teaches foundational courses including Minds, Brains, and Intelligent Behavior (COGS 222/PHIL 222/PSYC 222) and The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (PHIL 239/STS 239), alongside advanced seminars in Consciousness and 21st Century Epistemology.
As leader of Williams' Cognitive Science Program, he drives interdisciplinary collaboration across Philosophy, Psychology, and Computer Science departments through curriculum development and program administration from his office in Sawyer Library.
